Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli looks set to miss Saturday’s derby showdown with United at Old Trafford. (kick-off 12.45 GMT, live on Sky Sports 1)

Balotelli has been sidelined by a knee injury since the end of December but first-team coach David Platt revealed earlier this week that the Italian could feature following an intensive rehabilitation programme that saw him visit the United States.

However, it now looks unlikely that Balotelli will be in the City line-up, meaning United old-boy Carlos Tevez may be partnered up front by January signing Edin Dzeko.

An ankle problem makes tough-tackling midfielder Nigel de Jong doubtful, but definitely absent are Micah Richards (concussion) and Adam Johnson (ankle).

Manchester United are without defenders Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans for the lunchtime kick-off.

Ferdinand is ruled out with a calf injury sustained last weekend while warming up for the defeat against Wolves, while Evans is sidelined by an ankle injury that kept him out of the midweek internationals.

That means Chris Smalling is set to partner Nemanja Vidic at the heart of United’s defence, while Park Ji-Sung could make his first appearance since returning the Asian Cup.
