Premier League Preview: Arsenal vs Wigan Athletic

Arsenal are looking to take on Wigan Athletic in a game that might prove to be a goal fest.

What Arsenal have going in their favour is the fact that they are going to be with almost a full-strength squad. That is of course if you don’t consider the long term absentees from the squad.

Marouane Chamakh has managed to recover from his knee injury and along with him, Brazilian midfielder Denilson has also made a remarkable recovery to his hip injury. Both the Gunners picked up knocks in their midweek match with Leeds and it was previously believed they would be out for a week at least.

However goalkeepers, Lukasz Fabianski and Manuel Almunia are still due to recover from their injuries and will sit the game out. Abou Diaby, Sebastian Squillaci and Thomas Vermaelen are also out for the game, with all three of the players set to be back in action within the next two months.

On the Wigan side of the camp, things seem to be shaping up rather good. Victor Moses and James McCarthy were both spotted training with the squad once again and could make a surprise return to action. But the more likely probability is that the likes of Moses and McCarthy will still be out of action for the team, with the duo being the only long-term casualties for the side.

Franco Di Santo could potentially make his return to the starting eleven, after being given a cameo appearance against Fulham last week.

The only real question of the Wigan team is whether Chris Kirkland or Ali Al Habsi will start in goal. Kirkland has finally made a full recovery from his head injury, but it is still unclear if he will be given the nod over Al Habsi to retain his spot in the starting eleven.

According to most experts, the match could prove to be a pretty one sided affair. This is due to the fact that Arsenal have finally rediscovered their free-flowing football once again and could be looking to go all out against the struggling Wigan. Nonetheless, over the last couple of seasons, Wigan have emerged to be the bogey team for Arsenal. The last two times the teams met, Arsenal went on to drop five points, from winning positions against Wigan. If that happens to repeat itself on the night, then Wigan could finally climb their way out of the relegation zone, while Arsenal will be left with their heads in their hands after dropping easy points, once again.

However, with players like Andrei Arshavin having said that the team will go all out against Wigan at the Emirates, the chances of the North London side losing the game are slim to none.
