Liverpool vs. Wigan – Premier League Betting Preview
Wigan travel to Anfield after a rousing 4-3 victory over Blackburn Rovers but will have to be at their ultimate best to get a result against an in-form Liverpool side.

This year’s Premier League really has been something else; currently just 10 points separate 20th position with 8th position meaning with just a few wins and a few points gained in the league, you can jump from relegation strugglers to a team chasing a European place in no time at all.

Just look at Liverpool; granted they are a side that you would generally place in the top 5 in terms of ability anyway but just 5 weeks ago they were in real trouble, floundering around the edge of the relegation zone and not able to find a win from anywhere. Now, after 4 wins on the trot, they find themselves in 6th place and just 6 points off both 4th place and the ever-important Champions league place.

Their most recent victory was over Chelsea in a game full of tension after Fernando Torres’ transfer just a few days earlier. Up until this point, many neutrals would have put Liverpool’s run of form down to opposition or luck but after the Chelsea game, there is no denying that the Reds are starting to look like the team of old; tactically strong, a force in attack and a defence full of dogged determination.

Dogged determination is not really a trait that you could associate with Liverpool’s opponents this weekend, Wigan Athletic. Showing, at best, patchy form, Roberto Martinez’ side are the epitome of the word inconsistent. They have some strong players and in fairness an abundance of technical skill in players such as N’Zogbia and Rodallega but they just can’t get it to click regularly enough.

Currently in 18th place with 26 points, many pundits and fans alike have tipped them for relegation but with the league so, so tight down there, Latics fans will hope they can survive.

Last week’s performance, a pulsating match against Blackburn Rovers saw them run out as 4-3 winners; an amazing feat given their tendencies to crumble once going behind, as they did here. Without these three points they would have found themselves in dead last place in the league with not much hope; now they will travel to Anfield in buoyant mood.

The bookies are certainly of the belief that Wigan’s bubble will burst though, pricing Liverpool up as firm favourites; a best price of 4/11 being offered with Victor Chandler not really representing much value.

For the punters looking for big soccer odds surprises then it would be best to back the draw at 4/1 with Victor Chandler or the Wigan win at 8/1 with Paddy Power. With Liverpool’s home record of 8 wins, 3 draws and just 2 defeats and Wigan’s away record looking bleaker than a Russian winter I really can’t get past a home victory.

Goals should be the order of the day and if Liverpool can get one on the board early then they should continue to flow. Take the over 3.5 goals bet with Bodog at 85/40. Wigan may get a goal but that should just help play into this bet.

Ladbrokes run a nice bet called a Quattro and the choice to take here is the Evens for a Liverpool win with 3 or more goals scored in the game. This way if it is only a 2-1 victory it still counts and there is still enough value in the Evens price to get your money’s worth.
