Sporting Lisbon vs Rangers Preview
Sporting Lisbon appeared to be in disarray on before their tie against Rangers after being forced to publicly back manager Paulo Sergio.
It has been widely reported in the Portuguese press that Sergio faces losing his job if his side do not progress past the Scottish champions in Thursday's second leg, having earned a 1-1 draw last week in Glasgow.

The Europa League is seen as Sporting's last chance for success this season, having fallen an embarrassing 23 points behind league leaders Porto and with Monday's derby defeat to city rivals Benfica increasing the pressure on their beleaguered boss.

However, the club have moved to hand Sergio a vote of confidence ahead of the meeting with Rangers, quashing suggestions it is a make-or-break encounter.

A club statement read: "Sporting denies and refutes the news that has been made public about changes to the structure of the football technical team.

"Such reports are mere conjecture without any basis of the truth.

"To dispel any doubts, the trainer Paulo Sergio and the technical team have the full confidence of the management board to deal with the difficult sporting challenges ahead."

Sergio's opposite number, Walter Smith, hopes the news that Ally McCoist will be replacing him at the helm in the summer will provide Rangers with a timely boost ahead of the match.

McCoist - currently number two at Ibrox - has long been tipped to take over from Smith when he quits the Scottish champions at the end of the season but confirmation of the appointment only came yesterday.

Until the hastily-convened press conference to announce Smith's successor, there may have been an element of gloom around the Govan club following back-to-back disappointments on the field.

The first leg against Sporting in Glasgow ended in a 1-1 draw when the Portuguese claimed what could yet be an invaluable late away goal, before Rangers suffered a crushing 3-0 defeat to Old Firm rivals Celtic at the weekend.

But McCoist's planned promotion could be the perfect tonic at just the right time, according to Smith.

He said: "You would need to ask the players about their reaction but I was pleased that it was finally announced that Alistair would be taking over.

"It was pleasing from that aspect and, if it does give us a bit of a boost between now and the end of the season, we will be happy about that."
