(about match)
2010 AFF SUZUKI CUP
The semifinals match between the Philippines and Indonesia in the Asean Football Federation 2010 Suzuki Cup will be played, most likely, in Jakarta, Indonesia instead in the Philippines, Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richie Garcia told the DAILY STAR yesterday.
On Wednesday, POC chairman Monico Puentevella had announced in a press release that the match may be held in Bacolod.
Although they are still not giving up on the possibility of bringing the game to the Philippines, particularly, at the Panaad Sports Stadium in Brgy. Mansilingan in Bacolod City, Garcia said Mari Martinez of Philippine Football Federation told him that the Panaad Stadium is not ready to host the AFF game.
Martinez pointed out the lack of lightings at the Panaad as main reason why the Suzuki Cup semifinals game can not be played at the Bacolod City venue, Garcia said.
The PFF official also said that AFF requires a venue that can hold a capacity crowd of 40,000 and Panaad’s is only about 20,000, the PSC chairman added.
“However, all is not lost as we might still be able to convince Martinez to change his mind and help us put in some good words for the Philippines with the AFF officials,” Garcia said.
Although the PFF has replaced Martinez with Mariano “Nonong” Araneta as its president last week, Garcia said the international football body still recognizes Martinez as the official representative of the Philippines.
Garcia said he called Senator Miguel Zubiri yesterday to solicit his support for RP’s hosting of the AFF game and the senator assured him that he will try to talk to Martinez and assure him that the national government is ready to support the event.
“Installation of lightings at the Panaad can easily be done. We can rent cranes and other equipment to make the football pitch ready. We can tap the support of sports leaders and government officials to provide the resources for this international football event,” Garcia said.
As of yesterday, reports from the wires said the AFF has announced the venues for the semifinal matches in the 2010 Suzuki Cup.
A statement from AFF, announced in the ANC national cable channel yesterday said the two games between semifinalists Philippines and Indonesia will be played on December 16 and 19 at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.
Another report posted on government’s website Philippine News Agency quoted the AFF saying “The Philippines will not be able to play a leg of their semifinal or subsequent final at a home venue due to no available stadia in the country meeting the requirements for the AFF Suzuki Cup.”
According to the AFF statement, the decision was made “after careful consideration and talks with the relevant parties.”
“The Philippines Football Federation agrees they will be allowed to choose to play one leg of their semifinal at a neutral venue or both legs in the country of their opposition,” it added.
Meanwhile, PFF president Araneta, in a statement, said they will appeal the AFF decision.
“We appealed to the AFF earlier, through our national team manager Dan Palami who was in Vietnam, to reconsider its decision but our plea fell on deaf ears,” Araneta said.
“We are preparing the Pana-ad Football Stadium in Bacolod City for this eventuality, and we believe that it would meet the standards set by the AFF,” the PFF head added, referring to the facility that was the venue for the 2005 Southeast Asian Games men’s football competitions.
